Name : Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni - Ka'a He'e - Sweat Leaf

Brief History of Stevia

Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni has been used by the Guaraní, the indigenous peoples of current day Paraguay and southern Brazil for both its claimed medicinal and gastronomic properties.  They used it to sweeten their yerba mate, a bitter tasting tea that gives energy and stamina, very traditional to the Southern Cone of South America.  In 1899, the Swiss botanist Moisés Santiago Bertoni, during his research in eastern Paraguay first described the plant and the sweet taste in detail.[1]  In 1955 scientists discovered how to extract stevioside and rebaudioside from the stevia plant which have been measured to be 250-300 times that of sugar.  Despite its use in many countries around the world, a true stevia extract can only be sold as a dietary supplement in the USA.  Highly more refined Reb-A can be sold as a sweetener, Truvia and Purevia are examples, but those practically eliminate all of the plants synergistic values.  Also, the vast majority of stevia in the USA comes from China, where it has been modified over the years and is extracted in industrial sized factories with alcohols and mixed with bulking agents that have no nutritional value.  Maltodextrin, dextrose and erythritrol are favorites due to their cheap manufacturing and availability.  Maltodextrin has a blood glucose level close to that of sugar, while erythritrol is a sugar alcohol that in large quantities might cause laxative effects in humans.

The future belongs to Stevia Rebaudiana . The human body is not proficient of breaking down glycosides and thus stevia in any of its processed forms does not increase calories. Stevia in its refined kind can be hundred times sweeter than sugar. Stevia,Stevioside, Rebaudioside, Stevia Extract, or Stevia Concentrate when consumed in unprocessed form does not affect blood sugar levels and thus can be consumed by patients of diabetes and hypoglycemia. Stevia is recommended to patients of blood pressure, diabetes or obesity ailments. Of all the dietary supplements Stevia has a different taste. Stevia's taste has two components, sweet as well as bitter. If the leaf of Stevia is of imperfect form, the acrimonious will be the taste of Stevia. Stevia's glycoside on heating does not disintegrate down into putrid components which makes it good for preparation and baking use. Not all stevia is created equal however. Cid Botanicals Stevia uses plants of a variety in Paraguay that have been determined to be the best tasting stevia variety.
